Your information
Privacy policy
Life Legacy is designed to give families control and to use personal information only for clear, lawful purposes.
Effective 7 August 2026
1. Responsible party
smartMI Services (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2015/350740/07, is the responsible party for personal information processed through Life Legacy unless another party is identified for a specific activity.
2. Information we process
We may process account and contact details; names, dates and relationships; stories, photographs, audio and video; contributor and approval records; plaque, order and delivery details; payment references and billing records; support messages; and limited device, usage, security and log information.
3. Why we use information
We use information to create and operate memorials, verify authority, moderate contributions, manufacture and deliver plaques, process and reconcile payments, provide support, prevent misuse, meet legal obligations and improve reliability. We do not sell memorial information or use family content for third-party advertising.
4. Memorial visibility
A memorial administrator controls publication and collaborators. Information selected for a public memorial can be seen by visitors. Drafts, private uploads and administrative information require authorised access. Contributors should obtain permission before submitting information about another living person.
5. Service providers and transfers
We use trusted providers for hosting, storage, communications, payments, security, analytics and fulfilment. They may process only the information reasonably required for their role and are subject to appropriate safeguards. Where processing occurs outside South Africa, we take reasonable steps to apply protections required by applicable law.
6. Payments
Payments may be processed by Paystack or another provider identified at checkout. We receive transaction references, status and limited billing information needed to reconcile, support and refund purchases; we do not ask you to send full card details, PINs or verification codes.
7. Retention and deletion
We keep information only as long as reasonably needed to provide the service, preserve an active memorial, resolve disputes, maintain security and comply with accounting or legal duties. Deletion requests are handled under our account deletion policy. Some transaction, compliance or dispute records must be retained even after account access is removed.
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, including controlled account access, protected service connections and logging of important administrative actions. No online service can guarantee absolute security. Please report suspected unauthorised access promptly.
9. Your POPIA rights
Subject to the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013, you may ask whether we hold personal information about you, request access or correction, object to certain processing or request deletion where permitted. We may verify identity and authority before acting. You may also lodge a complaint with South Africa’s Information Regulator.
10. Children and family information
The service is intended to be administered by adults. Memorial content may concern children or other family members only where the submitting adult has appropriate authority. We do not knowingly invite children to create independent accounts.
11. Contact and changes
For privacy requests, email privacy@lifelegacy.co.za or support@lifelegacy.co.za. We may update this policy when our services or legal obligations change; the latest version and effective date will remain on this page.
